Nollywood star, Iniobong Edo, has also caught the divorce bug rampaging the entertainment world as her marriage has reportedly packed-up. After several weeks of speculations and denial, the Akwa-Ibom born actress took the bull by the horn penultimate week as she announced to the world on twitter that she had indeed bid farewell to her six-years marriage to Philips Ehiagwina. Ehiagwina, a US-based Nigerian, married the beautiful actress November 2008 in an elaborate ceremony that was held in Houston, Texas. Sadly, the estranged couple would have celebrated their wedding anniversary next month.
Contrary to speculations that she was unfaithful to her foreign-based hubby and that that was what led to the break-up of her marriage, the Nollywood star said she specifically asked for divorce because of “irreconcilable differences.” However, when she thought the issue had been settled with her tweets and was ready to put it behind her, people who claimed to be her in-laws took her up and informed the world that the dark-skinned star was indeed economical with the truth in her own version of the divorce saga. In a more interesting but messier twist, these people who claimed to be her in-laws alleged that she cheated on her husband and even threatened to wash her dirty linens in public should she continue to claim that the divorce was based on irreconcilable differences. They even claimed that Philip had collected the bride price he paid on her.
Ini Edo, a graduate of Theatre Arts from the University of Calabar, began her film career in 2000 and has featured in several movies since that time. Her divorce saga is coming just a week after the story of sensational music star, Tiwa Savage, and her estranged hubby TeeBliz went trending. Also, a month back, another actress Uche Ogbodo’s brief union with Ato Uby hit the rock. The light complexioned actress’ union broke up to the disappointment of her numerous fans. In an interview she granted an online publication, she claimed that the crash was due to “irreconcilable” differences too. Of course, the likes of Monalissa Chinda, Chika Ike, Stephanie Okereke, Eucharia Anunobi, Funke Akindele, Shan George, Kate Henshaw, Doris Simeon, Foluke Daramola, Fathia Balogun, Lola Alao, and Laide Bakare have also been bitten by the divorce/breakup bug.

Soka: One year after

About a year ago, Soka, a normal industrial community in Ibadan, became infamous and somewhat notorious. Nationwide, Soka became a word that evoked horror, fear and inexplicable twinge from Nigerians.
Words failed to capture the terrifying realities that were uncovered in a seemingly peaceful and almost uneventful community on 22 March, 2014. As a matter of fact, an abandoned property at the Idi Mangoro area of Soka community was given the epithet ‘the house of horror’ because of the atrocities that reigned supreme within the property, mirroring a despicable level of inhumanity.
Last year, about 15 frail looking people, who were suspected to have been kidnapped, and were chained, were discovered at the heinous hideout of the kidnappers. Other items indicating blooming activities of kidnap and ritual killings, including guns, cutlasses, human bones, skulls and decaying corpses were uncovered.
Quickly, the discovery attracted passersby and the foreign media, and Soka became another Mecca. Men, women and children (both young and aged) rushed to the area to confirm the stories that were spreading all over Ibadan, like skin disease on the destitute.
However, as seconds turned into minutes, minutes into hours, hours into days and days ultimately became weeks, the news about the house of horror diffused into the air. It was remembered sparingly and whispered amongst the people, but one question remained pertinent. What would become of the Idi Mangoro area, where the abandoned property was discovered? It’s a year now and the residents have not forgotten.
Nigerian Tribune visited the Soka community recently to do an exposé on what has become of the area, a year after the obnoxious occurrence that shocked the substratum of the community.  It was observed that in the place where the abandoned property that once served as a dungeon for allegedly kidnapped individuals and home for unscrupulous dismemberment of humans, now boasts multiple bungalow-like buildings that have been raised to lintel levels. Block-making machines and other construction materials were found lying around at the site.
Speaking with Nigerian Tribune, some security personnel at Radiant Agro Allied Ventures Limited, a company that specialises in the manufacture of flexible packaging material, located adjacent to the construction site, explained that construction had commenced at the site about three months after the suspicious activities came to light. However, they had no concrete details about the construction project or its developers. They also added that it is being speculated, however, that it is a government project.
They further added that if it is truly a government project, then they urge the government to complete it because abandoning it could lead to graver consequences as some street boys, popularly known in the local parlance as omo ita, have been sighted on several occasions, smoking and gambling in the premises.
They equally expressed their appreciation to the state government for opening up the area. Stressing that it used to be a thick forest before the March 2014 incident, the government opened up the area, creating a road that runs all through to the expressway. This, in their opinion, would deter criminals from carrying out their evil activities as they would be faced with the challenge of being discovered.
There has been perfect peace in the area –Community Leader
In an effort to further establish the state of activities at the area after the infamous label was forced on its neighbourhood, residents of Soka community spoke to Nigerian Tribune. Honourable Segun Adepoju, a politician and community leader, told Nigerian Tribune that “things have taken a different dimension. There are lots of projects going on there now and there has been perfect peace in the community.”
Speaking on the on-going construction of a school on the site, Adepoju said: “We learnt that the school is a Federal Model Girls’ College. Though work has stopped for almost a month now, we want to appeal to the government not to abandon the project. We also want to appeal to government to commence the construction of the abandoned bridge over the Ogunpa River. If that bridge is constructed, it’ll serve as another exit for the community, so that passage to and fro our community will be easy. We want government to also provide us with a market where our women can trade, so we won’t have to go far to make our purchases.”
Speaking on the level of sensitivity usually attached to jokes about the occurrence at Soka, Adepoju stated that “I feel very embarrassed. The issue has been really over flogged. Even those who come visiting from Lagos, subtly refer to Soka as a jungle but their conceptions are changing gradually.”
‘People are renting apartments again’
Speaking on the state of security in the area, Adepoju further noted that “Soka is very safe; I want to appreciate the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Sanyo Division, for dispatching patrol teams all over the area. This has greatly improved the security situation. People are more comfortable to rent homes here and move in with their families now.”

Annez Ifeji, another resident who spoke with Nigerian Tribune observed that; “We need government to continue providing social amenities for us; the bridge over the Ogunpa River should be re-built and the market promised us should be created. We don’t want the place to be abandoned again.”
He, however, described the initial situation as a really pathetic one. “As a matter of fact, some drivers would tell you they won’t stop at Soka, especially at night. It was really disturbing.”
Positive change has come for Soka –Resident
For Femi Abobade, change has come for Soka. “We’re experiencing changes now. The bush has been cleared and a construction project is ongoing at the site. We just appeal to government not to abandon the project.”  He appealed to government to construct an alternative route for the community that would link Lead City University, so that anytime there is traffic jam on the Lagos-Ibadan expressway, the road could be used.
Esther Adewole, another resident, also corroborated others on the state of improvement currently experienced by Soka community.
According to her, “things have improved now. On the on-going project, it looks like they have stopped working but I want to appeal to the government not to abandon the project.” She thus pleaded with the government to make the provision of social amenities and security in the area matters of priority.
A rather elated Solomon Agboola, another resident, told Nigerian Tribune that “it is relatively peaceful now. The government is constructing a school on the site. We were told it is a federal government project. We are really happy about that; we only want to beg the government not to abandon the project.”
A cross section of artisans and motorcycle operators who spoke to Nigerian Tribune also confirmed the relative peace currently enjoyed in the area, stating that people have been going about their businesses without fear. They, however, urged the government at all levels not to abandon the on-going construction on the site, as well as to provide more amenities for them.
Rehabilitation still ongoing—Govt
In his reaction, the Special Adviser to the Oyo State governor on Media, Dr. Festus Adedayo, told Nigerian Tribune of the state government’s efforts in the area.
According to him, “As we have said countless times, Soka is a forest that predated the Ajimobi government. We are not running an infallible government and we acknowledge that we should have converted that land mass into a productive venture for our people, as against the neglect by our predecessors.
“With the discovery of its being used as a ritual den, our government went to the drawing board and began a rehabilitation of the forest. We have just completed a comprehensive health centre there and a community market for the people, in line with the governor’s promise to the Soka people.
The governor also instructed the local government to construct a public primary school for the community.  That is ongoing now. When the Federal Government asked our government for a land to build school, we also gave them a land there so as to populate development at Soka. The governor has also promised to do more for the Soka people immediately he comes back for second term.”

Africa’s Future Billionaires Will Be Farmers, Says Nigerian Minister

Africa’s future billionaires and millionaires will make their money from agriculture, says Akinwumi Adesina, Nigeria’s Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, according to a report in InformationNigeria.
Adesina was named Forbes African of the Year in December 2013 for his reforms to Nigeria’s farming sector, according to a BBC report.
In his acceptance speech, Adesina said at the time he wanted to help people become rich through farming.
“My goal is to make as many millionaires, maybe even billionaires, from agriculture as possible,” he said, according to BBC.
African Development Bank is financing $170 million for a Nigerian project that aims to transform agriculture. The project aims to create agricultural entrepreneurs and producers by providing about 120,000 jobs along the value chain of priority commodities, InformationNigeria reports. An additional 20 million tons of key food crops including cassava, rice, and sorghum will be added to the domestic food supply each year, if all goes according to plan.
A significant part of the project is developing outreach models in agriculture with young entrepreneurs, aka youth agripreneurs. The plan is for agripreneurs to promote agriculture among other youth in their regions through peer education, training and demonstration of agricultural best practices, and business skills in value-chain development.
Adesina urged youth to see agriculture as a business, not as a tool for development. As African governments roll out plans to unlock wealth from the soil, Adesina said he predicts a new, wealthy population made up largely of young people adept at creating jobs and bringing business opportunities to rural communities across the continent.
“Today, major local and international investors are investing in (agriculture,” Adesina said. “The number of seed companies alone has risen dramatically and the banks are lending to the sector more than ever before.”
Adesina spoke at the launch of the Agricultural Transformation Agenda Support Program Phase 1, a project of African Development Bank, Nigeria’s Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development and the International Institute of Tropical Agriculture, according to InformationNigeria.
Adesina is credited with helping bring transparency to the supply and distribution of fertilizer in Nigeria, which was subject in the past to massive corruption, BBC reports.

Boko Haram purportedly pledges allegiance to ISIS

(CNN)Boko Haram, the Nigeria-based Islamist terror group, has pledged allegiance to ISIS, according to an audio message purported to be from Boko Haram's leader, Abubakar Shekau.
In the audio, which was posted online Saturday, the speaker says Boko Haram is announcing its "allegiance to the Caliph of the Muslims, Ibrahim ibn Awad ibn Ibrahim al-Husseini al-Qurashi," which is another name for ISIS leader Abu Bakr al-Baghdadi.
CNN has not been able to independently authenticate the message.

Expert: Coupling makes sense

But Jacob Zenn, an expert on the terror group and is with the Jamestown Foundation, said the recording appeared to be authentic. He said that while other messages have been faked, the speaker in this one is Shekau.
"Boko Haram joining the ISIS fold makes sense to both groups," he said from Abuja, Nigeria. "Boko Haram will get legitimacy, which will help its recruiting, funding and logistics as it expands into (French-speaking) West Africa. It will also get guidance from ISIS in media warfare and propaganda. Previously Boko Haram was a sort of outcast in the global Jihadi community. Now it is perhaps ISIS's biggest affiliate.
"ISIS gets more international legitimacy as a global caliphate."
Zenn said the allegiance will be official when an ISIS leader such as spokesman Abu Mohammed al Adnani issues a statement.
Boko Haram has had two main factions -- one led by Shekau and the other comprising former members of Ansaru, a Boko Haram offshoot. Ansaru had been operating from around 2012 as the Nigerian wing of AQIM (al Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb). After the French-led intervention in Mali in 2013, a significant number of Ansaru members re-integrated with Shekau, Zenn told CNN.
The prerequisite for Boko Haram joining ISIS coalition was a coming together of two factions.
ISIS connected with former Ansaru fighters within Boko Haram and pressed them to further unify the group's ranks. The result was the formation of a unity general command between the two factions.
That involved bridging of some ideological differences between the al Qaeda-like Ansaru and the ultra extreme "takfiri"-like Shekau.
The pledge follows a period during which Shekau's faction had been mimicking ISIS, including praising al-Baghdadi and featuring his image in their videos and photos. Zenn said that until recently there had been little feedback from ISIS, apart from a few references to Nigerian jihadis in recent issues of the English-language Dabiq magazine.
It appears that a month ago ISIS set up a Twitter account on which Saturday's message was linked, Zenn said. The Twitter handle was mutually promoted by Boko Haram and ISIS.

U.S. doubts about if partnership will be effective

In July, Shekau voiced support for ISIS, and declared a overtaken town in northeast Nigeria to be part of an Islamic caliphate. But he also said he was praying for al Qaeda leader Ayman al-Zawahiri and Taliban leader Mullah Omar.
U.S. intelligence officials have some doubts the two groups would get along.
The CIA's analysis has been that Boko Haram is very African and rooted in that region's Islamic practices, even if they have similar fundamentalist interpretations of Islam. And ISIS's Arab leadership and membership tends to have racist attitudes toward blacks, not unlike the society they come from.
ISIS leaders view Shekau as inferior, partly for racist reasons, the CIA indicated at a briefing for reporters.

    Increasing violence

Boko Haram, whose name translates as "Western education is sin," has been waging a yearslong campaign of terror aimed at instituting its extreme version of Sharia law.
Boko Haram's tactics have intensified in recent years, from battling Nigerian government soldiers to acts disproportionately affecting civilians -- such as raids on villages, mass kidnappings, assassinations, market bombings and attacks on churches and unaffiliated mosques.
Much of this violence has taken place in Nigeria. But neighboring countries, such as Cameroon and Chad, have also been hit increasingly hard.

Shanghai new year crush kills 36

A crush at New Year's Eve celebrations in Shanghai has killed 36 people and injured some 47 others, Chinese officials say.
The crush happened in Chenyi Square in Shanghai's historic Bund district overlooking the Huangpu river.
Thousands of people had gathered to see in 2015.
Social media reports suggest the stampede was triggered by people stopping to pick up fake money thrown from the balcony of a nightclub.
The Shanghai City government said the situation began to deteriorate at 23:35 local time (15:35 GMT) and that a "working group" had been set up to handle the incident.
Photos posted on social media showed people receiving first aid on the road and large numbers of police securing the area.
Many of the dead are believed to be students, with 25 of them women, state media report.
President Xi Jinping has told the Shanghai government to find the causes of the crush as soon as possible, according to state TV.
A traditional new year fireworks display on the Bund had already been cancelled due to official fears of overcrowding, the Shanghai Daily reports.
The BBC's John Sudworth in Shanghai says the investigation may focus on why so many people turned out despite the cancellation and whether there were enough police resources in place to look after them.
    'Too many people'
English tourist Rebecca Thomas from Manchester told the BBC she had seen dead bodies on the ground.
"CPR was being given to 10-15 people in the street by loved ones whilst police stood by and watched.
"I asked a police officer if I could help and was told to move along. I saw a man giving his wife or girlfriend mouth-to-mouth on the floor whilst police watched," she said.
"There were really too many people!" wrote one user of Sina Weibo - a Chinese equivalent of Twitter. "Squeezed inside, you could not budge, and could only move with the crowd."
The user, called iiisay, added that traffic police had linked hands to form a human wall after the crush, but the wall was still breached several times.
US photographer Gaby Gabriel told the BBC: "Nobody seemed to be in control and people were crying. It was one of those times when you see the worst in people."
Another Sino Weibo user, Small Metal Makes Steel, said: "At the time there were lots of people, police at the scene maintained order and wouldn't let people near [the scene of the injuries].
Lots of people spontaneously linked hands to block the crowds, so the injured had space to settle down, and to allow a clear passage for ambulances," he added.
In a statement, the Shanghai City government said that those hurt had been transferred to hospitals across the city, and that the Shanghai party secretary had visited some of the injured.
Earlier, Shanghai's police department wrote on its verified social media account that some "tourists" had "fallen over" at the Bund, and urged people to leave the area in an orderly fashion.
According to the Shanghai Daily, close to 300,000 people turned up for New Year's Eve celebrations last year, leading to traffic problems.

Man and woman die in New Year's Eve house fire

The bodies of a man and a woman have been found inside a badly burned house in south-east London.
Two people tried to enter the property in Ashmead Road, Deptford, in an attempt to rescue the pair but were unable to reach them.
Fire crews arrived at the house shortly after 21:30 GMT and later found the bodies of a woman in her 80s and a man in his 60s.
The Metropolitan Police said it was investigating the cause of the blaze.
London Fire Brigade station manager Lee Sparks, who was at the scene, said: "Neighbours alerted the brigade when they saw smoke coming from the house.
"Two members of the public entered the house in an attempt to rescue the occupants but were unable to reach them.
"These two people were treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service."
A police spokesman said officers believed they knew the identities of the dead, but were awaiting formal identification and confirmation that next of kin had been informed.

The Coordinator of the National Directorate of Employment in Cross River State, Mr. Edem Duke on Tuesday disclosed that the agency has so far trained 727 unemployed youths in the state in 2014. He said the period, which covers January to December 2014, was aimed at reducing the level of unemployment in Nigeria.

Duke said the Director-General of NDE, Mr. Malam Abubakar, approved the training of the youths as a means of reducing unemployment in the country and making them self reliant.

He said, “In 2014, we have trained 50 youths in different agricultural programmes including crop production, poultry, food preservation, aqua-culture and others in the state.

“We have also trained 296 unemployed youths in some vocational trades such as plumbing, welding, auto-mechanic, painting, computer repairs, fabrication and others.

“Under our Small Scale Enterprise programme, we gave out a soft loan of N20, 000 each to 100 unemployed youths to enable them start up a medium business.”

He said that the loan would be paid in three years with a compound interest of nine per cent only, adding that it was meant to engage the youths in meaningful activities.

“We have also recruited 81 graduates into our graduate coaching scheme to teach school-leavers who have deficiency in their senior secondary school examinations.

He advised the beneficiaries to make good use of the training in order to contribute to the development of the country’s economy.

Duke commended the efforts of Abubakar in engaging youths in meaningful activities that would make them self employed and job creators.

CAN - Muslims Did Not Protect Christians On Christmas Day

The Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) in Kaduna State on Wednesday debunked widely circulated reports that some Muslims protected Christians during Christmas service in Kaduna town. Reverend Sunday Ibrahim, the secretary of the Kaduna State chapter of CAN, made the refutation in a statement he released at a press briefing.

Mr. Ibrahim stated that it had nothing against genuine peace advocates, but added that it opposed the spreading of falsehood. The Christian organization declared that there was no single church in Kaduna that faced any attack that warranted protection. It also disclosed that the usual security agents were drafted to secure Christian worshippers on Christmas day.

“It has become imperative for us to clarify this falsehood and confusion in local and international media,” said the CAN spokesman. “Many of our members have been calling and asking questions whether a Church was protected from being attacked by Muslims in [the] Sabo area on Christmas day? And we said it is not true, and we don’t want people to create panic and dishing out [an] inciting story,” the statement continued.

According to the CAN official, “there was no attempted attack on any Church in Kaduna town on Christmas day that [warranted] some Muslims coming to protect the Church from attackers.”

Mr. Ibrahim emphasized that there was “no record of any Church in Sabon Tasha, Barnawa and environs out of the over 400 Churches that was protected by Muslims. Sabon Tasha is a 100 percent Christian-dominated area, and how will Muslims come from Rigasa and Tudun Wada to protect a Church in Sabon Tasha?”

He added: “We are not against any peace initiative as we are working with Jama’atu Nasril Islam for peace. However we are not aware of this fabricated story from any Church, security agencies, military, police and the SSS capable of creating confusion.

He explained that some Muslims visited a Christian pastor on Christmas day to celebrate Christmas with him, but not to protect a Church as was widely reported. He urged the media to verify their facts before publishing, assuring Christians that no single Church was threatened on Christmas day.
